Beyond The Scar™

Why We Created a Scar Revision Protocol Rooted in Healing, Confidence, and Compassion

Not all scars are simply cosmetic.

Some carry memories patients never asked to hold onto. Surgery. Trauma. Cancer treatment. Difficult healing journeys. Moments of fear, uncertainty, or survival. Whilst a scar may physically sit on the skin, emotionally it can sit far deeper.

At Skin Aesthetics, we have always believed that scar treatment deserves a more thoughtful, medically guided, and compassionate approach. Not rushed treatments. Not generic advice. Not a one size fits all protocol.

That belief is exactly why Beyond The Scar™ was created. This is not simply a treatment pathway.

It is a medically led scar revision protocol designed to support patients through different stages of healing with structure, safety, evidence based care, and genuine understanding of the emotional impact scarring can have on confidence and quality of life.

Created by Kelly and the team at Skin Aesthetics, Beyond The Scar™ was developed to help medical aesthetic practitioners approach scar treatment in a more strategic, staged, and clinically responsible way. The protocol focuses on supporting long term healing outcomes for scars following surgery, cancer removal procedures, trauma, and other forms of skin injury.

Because healing should never stop once stitches are removed.

Why Scar Treatment Needs A More Structured Approach

One of the biggest misconceptions around scar revision is that all scars should be treated the same way.

In reality, scar tissue changes significantly over time.

A fresh surgical scar behaves very differently to a raised hypertrophic scar that has been present for over a year. The inflammatory activity is different. The collagen behaviour is different. The skin integrity is different.

Yet many patients are still receiving inconsistent advice or treatments that are introduced too aggressively, too early, or without proper staging.

This is where the Beyond The Scar™ protocol becomes so important. The protocol was created to guide practitioners through:
  • scar age assessment
  • scar morphology
  • staged healing timelines
  • treatment safety
  • collagen remodelling strategies
  • inflammation management
  • long term tissue support

Rather than chasing quick cosmetic improvement, the focus is on creating healthier scar healing over time.

The Emotional Side Of Scarring Matters Too

One of the reasons Kelly felt so passionately about developing this protocol was because scar treatment is rarely just physical.

Patients who have undergone cancer surgery, traumatic injury, emergency procedures, or difficult healing journeys often carry emotional weight alongside visible scarring. Some feel self conscious. Others avoid mirrors, photographs, certain clothing, or social situations altogether.

Many simply want to feel comfortable in their skin again. That human side of healing matters deeply to us.

At Skin Aesthetics, we never wanted scar treatment to feel cold, transactional, or overly clinical. We wanted patients to feel supported, educated, reassured, and genuinely cared for throughout their healing journey.

Beyond The Scar™ was built around exactly that ethos.

A softer, more compassionate approach to evidence based scar management.

Understanding The Beyond The Scar™ Protocol

The protocol is divided into three structured healing phases based on scar age and presentation.

This staged approach allows treatment selection to remain appropriate, safe, and biologically supportive to the skin’s healing processes.

Protocol 1: Early Healing Phase

Scar Age: Less Than 6 Months

During the early stages of healing, the skin is still highly active biologically. Inflammation, collagen production, and tissue repair are all ongoing.

At this stage, the protocol focuses exclusively on LED phototherapy using Dermalux technology. The aim is to:
  • reduce inflammation
  • support fibroblast activity
  • stimulate ATP production
  • encourage healthier collagen organisation
  • improve healing quality

This phase is intentionally gentle.

Rather than interfering aggressively with fresh tissue, the focus is on supporting the body’s own healing response safely and carefully.

Expected outcomes during this phase may include:
  • reduced redness
  • improved healing
  • healthier collagen formation
  • reduced risk of hypertrophic scarring

Protocol 2: Established Scar Phase

Scar Age: Over 6 Months

Once a scar becomes more established, treatment options can progress further. At this stage, the Beyond The Scar™ protocol introduces:
  • medical microneedling
  • LED phototherapy support

Microneedling works by creating controlled micro injury within the tissue, helping stimulate collagen I and III production whilst encouraging scar remodelling over time.

Combined with LED phototherapy, this phase aims to:
  • soften fibrotic tissue
  • improve texture and pliability
  • support collagen maturation
  • reduce inflammation post treatment

Importantly, this phase is carefully structured with staged intervals to allow the skin time to respond appropriately between sessions.

Again, the protocol prioritises long term tissue health rather than aggressive short term intervention.

Protocol 3: Raised Or Hypertrophic Scar Phase

Scar Age: Over 9 Months

Raised or hypertrophic scars require a more advanced and medically guided approach. Within this stage, the protocol may incorporate:
  • Kenalog (Triamcinolone) injections
  • medical microneedling
  • LED phototherapy

Kenalog injections are used carefully and strategically to help reduce excessive scar tissue activity within hypertrophic scars.

The protocol then allows time for tissue softening before introducing further collagen remodelling support through microneedling and LED therapy.

This phased sequence is incredibly important.

One of the key principles behind Beyond The Scar™ is respecting tissue behaviour and healing timelines rather than overtreating the skin.

Why Consultation Led Care Matters In Scar Revision

No two scars are identical.

Even scars that appear visually similar can behave completely differently depending on:
  • skin type
  • inflammation levels
  • surgical technique
  • healing response
  • genetics
  • collagen activity
  • previous trauma to the skin

This is why consultation led care sits at the centre of the Beyond The Scar™ philosophy.

At Skn Aesthetic, scar assessment involves far more than simply looking at the surface of the skin. We consider:
  • scar age
  • texture
  • vascularity
  • thickness
  • pigmentation
  • mobility
  • patient symptoms
  • emotional impact
  • previous healing history

Because effective scar revision should always be personalised.

More Than Aesthetic Improvement

Of course, improving the appearance of scarring matters.

But Beyond The Scar™ was never created purely for cosmetic reasons. The protocol was designed to help improve:
  • tissue health
  • scar flexibility
  • redness
  • discomfort
  • collagen organisation
  • confidence
  • emotional wellbeing

For many patients, scar treatment is about reclaiming comfort in their own skin after difficult experiences.

And honestly, that matters enormously.

The Future Of Scar Revision Should Feel More Human

Modern medical aesthetics is evolving beautifully.

Patients no longer simply want treatments. They want understanding. They want safety. They want education. They want practitioners who genuinely care about the journey as much as the outcome.

Beyond The Scar™ reflects that shift entirely.

At Skin Aesthetics, we believe scar revision should feel:
  • medically responsible
  • evidence based
  • compassionate
  • structured
  • personalised
  • emotionally supportive

Because patients are never “just” a scar.

And healing is about far more than what we can see on the surface.

FAQs

What is Beyond The Scar™?

Beyond The Scar™ is a medically led scar revision protocol designed to support scar healing through staged, evidence based treatments tailored to scar age and morphology.

What types of scars can the protocol help treat?

The protocol is designed for surgical scars, post cancer surgery scars, hypertrophic scars, and other forms of established scar tissue.

Why is scar age important in treatment planning?

Scar tissue changes biologically over time. Different healing stages require different treatment approaches to ensure safe and effective outcomes.

Is microneedling safe for scars?

When performed appropriately and at the correct stage of healing, medical microneedling can help improve collagen remodelling, texture, and scar pliability.

Why is LED therapy used within the protocol?

LED phototherapy helps reduce inflammation, support healing, stimulate fibroblast activity, and encourage healthier collagen organisation within scar tissue.
