Orthopaedic Injection Uses

Orthopaedic injections can be used to treat or alleviate the symptoms of various musculoskeletal conditions, such as joint pain, inflammation, and nerve pain. They give temporary relief from pain, discomfort, and swelling, which can improve joint function. Injections are most commonly administered in the knee, hip, elbow, and ankle joints.

ORTHOPAEDIC FAQs

What Are Orthopaedics?

Toggle
Orthopaedics is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system– the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It helps patients recover from injuries, manage pain, and improve mobility.

What is Osteoarthritis (OA)?

Toggle

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis and can cause joints to feel stiff and inflamed. It is more common in older people but can also affect younger people, especially if a joint injury occurs. OA can cause the joints to swell, change shape, and make a creaking noise.

The symptoms of OA vary depending on the case; some people may experience no pain at all, while others may be in pain to the point of reducing their mobility. There can be muscle loss around the joints, causing them to feel weaker. Almost all joints can develop osteoarthritis, but the most common places are the fingers, thumbs, knees, lower back, and neck.

What Injections are Used for Osteoarthritis?

Toggle
There are several types of joint injections that can be used to treat osteoarthritis, offering pain relief or improving joint function. The most common are corticosteroid injections, which are a potent anti-inflammatory; hyaluronic acid injections, which lubricate and cushion the joint to reduce pain; platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, which use the patient’s own blood to promote tissue repair and reduce inflammation; and hydrogel injections; which bind to the soft tissue covering the joints (synovium) and prevents pro-inflammatory proteins from passing through into joints, which consequently reduces pain and swelling and improves joint function.

How Effective are Cortisone Injections for Osteoarthritis?

Toggle
Corticosteroid injections, commonly known as steroid injections, can alleviate joint pain, though the effects vary depending on the patient and the severity of the pain. While these injections can act as an anti-inflammatory and temporary pain reliever, they don’t treat or address any underlying disease progression.

What is the Difference Between Ostenil® and Ostenil® Plus?

Toggle

OSTENIL® contains 20mg / 2ml sodium hyaluronate and is administered into the synovial joint as a course of one to three weekly injections. OSTENIL® PLUS contains a higher concentration of 40mg / 2ml sodium hyaluronate, with the addition of mannitol. This formulation offers effective symptomatic relief with a single injection in large joints. Mannitol is a simple sugar derivative and works as a free radical scavenger, thus helping to stabilise the chains of sodium hyaluronate. Both formulations are well tolerated.

What is a "Synovial Joint" and "Synovial Fluid"?

Toggle
A synovial joint is one in which the ends of the bones are enclosed in a capsule containing a thick, slippery liquid called synovial fluid.
