Amino Acids vs. Hyaluronic Acid: What Are the Benefits for Your Clients?

When offering aesthetic treatments, especially injectables, it’s essential to understand the ingredients you’re recommending to your clients. Hyaluronic acid and amino acids are two powerhouse components that regularly appear in aesthetic injectables. But what are they, what’s the difference, and which offers more benefits for the skin?

In this article, we’ll break down the amino acid vs hyaluronic acid debate, and explore Jalupro, an innovative amino acid replacement therapy.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA), also known as hyaluron or hyaluronan, is a powerful ingredient with several benefits for the body and skin. This carbohydrate molecule naturally occurs in the body and can bind and retain water in the skin. It’s widely known as one of the most hydrating skincare ingredients for its ability to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it the key ingredient in most skin boosters.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

Although the body can naturally produce hyaluronic acid, its ability to do so decreases as we age, causing the skin to become prone to dryness, irritation, ageing, and loss of elasticity. Applying hyaluronic acid topically gives the skin a boost of hydration, which can improve its quality and appearance.

This powerful humectant has several skincare benefits, such as triggering collagen and elastin production for smoother and more supple skin. The added moisture strengthens the skin barrier, protecting it from sensitivity, damage, and irritation. It can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving elasticity.

What are Amino Acids in Injectable Skincare?

Amino acids are small molecules that form proteins when combined; they’re among the most fibrous proteins in the skin along with keratins, collagen, and elastin. They comprise 20% of the body’s composition and play a critical role in multiple essential bodily functions, such as tissue growth, repair, and maintenance. They support the immune system and can act as an energy provision.

They’re divided into two main types: essential and non-essential amino acids. The essential kinds aren’t naturally produced by the body; they’re found in certain foods and supplements such as lean meats, dairy, soy, and whole grains. The body produces non-essential amino acids, so it isn’t ‘essential’ to get them through diet.

Benefits of Amino Acids

The natural moisturising factor (NMF) is a determining element of healthy skin. It helps the stratum corneum (skin barrier) retain moisture, which in turn enhances the skin’s quality and appearance. When the NMF is depleted, the stratum corneum becomes dehydrated, leading to flakiness, dryness, and damage to the skin.

Amino acids are essential nutrients for the skin, making up more than half of the NMF. They perform a wide range of functions for the skin, including promoting wound healing and protecting damaged skin, protecting against sun damage, increasing moisture and water retention, and helping to maintain a healthy skin microbiome. They also have antioxidant properties that help reduce inflammation, improve the complexion, and protect the skin from free radicals.

There are plenty of amino acids in the body, but only 20 are most important for our health, and a few of them have added benefits for the skin.

  • Glycine: Increases collagen production and maintains skin firmness.
  • Arginine: Promotes wound healing, repairs skin damage and keeps the skin hydrated.
  • Histidine: Protects against environmental stressors, calms irritation, and stimulates collagen synthesis.
  • Methionine: Improves skin tone and elasticity, protects against free radicals, and reduces inflammation.
  • Lysine: Retains moisture and boosts hydration to preserve the skin barrier, and maintains skin firmness.
  • Proline: Promotes tissue repair by stimulating collagen and elastin production.
  • Leucine: Promotes cellular regeneration and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Can Amino Acids and Hyaluronic Acid Be Combined?

Amino acids and hyaluronic acid, respectively, offer great benefits for the skin. When combined, they can enhance each other’s functions, leading to incredible skin results. A study found that combining hyaluronic acid and amino acids helped combat skin ageing by increasing fibroblast activity and collagen production.

Amino acids promote tissue repair by stimulating collagen and elastin to promote cellular regeneration. As the skin heals, the added hydration from hyaluronic acid keeps the skin barrier moisturised and protected from dryness, flakiness and further damage. This results in a clearer, healthier complexion plumped with a youthful glow.

What is Jalupro?

Jalupro is a collection of biorevitalisers which are the building blocks to healthy skin, feeding fibroblasts with amino acid to produce collagen. Unlike other products on the market, the introduction of amino acids is unique. The majority of the range is formed with both hyaluronic acid and amino acids (including L-lysine, L-leucine, glycine, and L-proline). It’s an excellent solution for enhancing moisture, improving texture, reducing wrinkles, and providing a more youthful complexion. It can be used to treat a wide range of areas, including:
  • Face
  • Neck
  • Décolleté
  • Underarms
  • Hands

After treatment, results will be visible within one to two weeks, but it can take up to four weeks to see full results. They’ll last up to six months, and maintenance appointments two to four weeks apart are recommended for optimal rejuvenation.

ACRE is the only official UK distributor of Jalupro products that treat a range of skin concerns.

Jalupro Classic improves skin quality and texture by boosting new collagen production, Jalupro HMW can be used for the same purposes but provides additional hydration due to its higher content of hyaluronic acid, and Jalupro Super Hydro increases collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin to improve facial contour and shape. Jalupro Young Eye is designed specifically to treat delicate skin in the periorbital area, to reduce wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Jalupro Glow Peel is an innovative chemical peel used to treat various concerns, such as uneven skin tone, texture, acne scars, and pigmentation by promoting cell renewal.

Amino Acid vs. Hyaluronic Acid: Which is Best?

Whether amino acids or hyaluronic acid is best for treatment depends on your patient’s skin condition and goals. Those seeking tissue repair and cell regeneration for a rejuvenated appearance might opt for amino acids, while some may simply want the hydrating and plumping benefits that hyaluronic acid offers. Neither one ingredient is better than the other; they work differently to achieve different skin goals, though when combined, like in Jalupro’s formulation, they can produce incredible results.
